Garcia wanted to come to Tampa in 2004

Recommended Posts

This was covered in great detail during the game broadcast. According to Chris Myers, the Bucs only had $500,000 to offer under the cap while the Browns had $5 million. Obviously Garcia took the $5 million. The Bucs might have had more money and could have even signed him at a discount because Garcia was so excited at the chance to play for the Bucs that he bought his own plane ticket to Tampa to visit One Buc Place. But some genius GM had screwed the Bucs over with a series of brain-dead contracts that put them way over the cap.

I forget that GM's name. Can someone jog my memory?

They aren't brain dead moves when you put a team in cap hell, screw them with a couple of bad contracts, and then go work for another team in their division.

Again, the cap situation wasn't by mistake. Starting after the 1999 season, the team mortgaged the future to win a Superbowl. Then after winning in 2002, they went further in debt to attempt a repeat. McKay also made a few moves to screw the team on the way out.
