DFA for Cron?? Are you nuts?

Recommended Posts

The Rays designated for assignment leading home run hitter C.J. Cron on Tuesday among their moves to open space on the 40-man roster to add five prospects.

Cron, 28, has seemed to be on the way out despite hitting 30 homers while posting a .253 average and 74 RBIs as the Rays have talked of upgrading to more of an impact bat.

They could have waited until the Nov. 30 non-tender deadline to buy more time to work out a trade but obviously felt the roster spot was worth doing so now. Cron was projected to make $5.2 million in arbitration.

By designating Cron, the Rays could still work out a trade as they did last spring after taking similar action with Corey Dickerson, as they have seven days to trade or waive a player.

Added to the roster were LHP Kyle Bird, LHP Brock Burke, RHP Ian Gibaut, OF Joe McCarthy and OF Jesus Sanchez.

To make additional room, the Rays also DFA'd RHP Oliver Drake and LHP Hoby Milner, and outrighted RHP Jose Mujica to the minors.

They now have a full 40-man roster.
